Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the emotional experiences of older women who chose not to have children and to determine how this decision influences their well-being and sense of purpose in old age. A qualitative approach was used, based on in-depth interviews with 15 women aged 60 and over residing in Puebla, Mexico. The analysis was performed using thematic coding with the ATLAS.ti software. Predominant emotions of freedom, pride, and satisfaction were identified, as well as episodes of loneliness and reflection linked to societal expectations of motherhood. The findings show that these emotional experiences are related to processes of adaptation, resilience, and the construction of meaning in life. The study concludes that fulfillment in old age does not depend on motherhood, but rather on authenticity, autonomy, and the relationships that each woman chooses to build.
